Tips for dog owners

Entry requirements to Austria:
Those entering EU countries or Switzerland should consider the following:
  • Valid rabies vaccination (vaccination for at least 30 days old, the duration of immunity depends on the manufacturer's specifications, it must be noted in the EU pet passport; most vaccines are now valid for three years, some even four)
  • Identification by microchip or legible tattoo (tattoo is recognized until 2012). The Pet passport, which must be filled out by your veterinarian, includes all vaccinations, identification and description of the animal.
  • The use of leashes and muzzling of dogs in Austria is regulated at the municipal level. In Ried in the Upper Inn Valley there is only the leash regulation, muzzles are not mandatory. Since Hotel Riederhof is located on the outskirts of the town, you may let your pet off the leash after about 180 meters.
  • Muzzles are required in all forms of public transportation except lifts. It is therefore advisable always to have leash and muzzle with you when staying in Austria to be prepared in case both are needed.

Hiking with your dog:

Hiking with the dog in the Tyrol is beneficial for both man and dog, here are some points:
  • When choosing your hike or walk, consider the abilities of both the dog and its master! The hotel’s descriptions of its own hiking and guided walks are divided into various levels of difficulty. The simplest level begins with one or two “boots” (Level of Difficulty) tour and you may slowly work your way up. Every level is possible with us including the most advanced level "Reinhold Messner".
  • In addition, it is advisable to have a harness for the dog, so he can be restrained and protected in difficult situations.
  • Should the situation occur in which I can let my dog run loose on an open field or on the roadside, dogs must not chase or hunt wild animals!
  • Remember to take a sufficient amount of water along for dog. And of course, don’t just think about your own picnic lunch, but bring food for the dog.
  • Last but not least, it is strongly recommended to take “doggy waste bags” with you to remove his excrements from the trails! These bags are available free of charge at the reception desk and special “dog pails” are located all over Ried and the surroundings.
